as america gets set for its big game. >> and we're getting set with al in san francisco and natalie live in baltimore "today," friday, february 1st, 2013. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. i'm matt lauer. >> good morning, everyone. i'm savannah guthrie. you did not have to grow up in new york city to know the name ed koch, who served as mayor for three terms from 1978 to 1989 and used his sometimes combative style to help rescue the city from near financial ruin. >> i did grow up around here. he was a force. when you would come across a voter, he would always say, how am i doing? am i doing okay? he died overnight at new york

presbyterian hospital here in the city where he made his mark with a larger than life personality. here is nbc's ron allen. >> hi! >> reporter: ed koch was a quintessential new yorker and one of the city's most popular and outspoken politicians, known for his no nonsense in your face colorful personality and his trademark question asked of friends and faoes alike, even o "saturday night live." >> how am i doing? >> reporter: edward irving koch was born in the bronx new york in 1984, drafted out of college by the army to serve in world war ii. when he returned home, he began climbing the political ladder. a lifelong democrat, who served on new york city council, then three terms in the congress. and in 1977, he became new york's 105th mayor, a job koch often said he wanted for life.

koch tool took over a city facing financial crisis and was credited with saving it from disaster. he was mayor for 12 years that were spirited, irreverent and rarely, if ever, boring. he lost to mario cuomo. >> i promised i would never run for governor again. >> you promised that before. >> in 1989 he lost his bid for an unprecedented fourth term as mayor to david bicken. >> i want you not to feel sorry for me. believe me, there is a life after mayorcy. >> reporter: he never married nor had any children. he endure aid stroke, heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery after leaving office. he also wrote more than a dozen books, became an enthusiastic twitter user and came into the homes of many americans as the

judge on "the people's court." >> judgment for the plaintiff. >> reporter: one former new york mayor said he wouldn't wish the position on his worst enemy but koch said it's the greatest job anyone could ever have. he was certainly an unbelievably colorful figure who dearly will be missed here in new york and around the state, around this country for that matter. flags will be flown at half-staff and funeral arrangements have been made, that service will be held here in manhattan on monday. matt? >> thank you very much. and mr. mayor, thanks for everything. here is savannah. >> matt, thanks. another breaking story this morning. a pilot lost consciousness during an alaska airlines flight to seattle. his co-pilot was then forced to make an emergency landing in portland, oregon. tom costello covers aviation for us. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. this is why commercial airplanes always have t pilots in the cockpit. alaska airlines flight 473 flying from l.a. to seattle that left l.a. about 6:40 pm.

it was mid flight when the pilot suddenly became unconscious. the plane was on autopilot at the time. the first officer took over the controls and declared an emergency and put the plane down in portland, oregon a doctor on board helped to treat the pilot and paramedics in portland then met the plane on the ramp and assisted with treatment before taking him to a nearby hospital. we don't have any word on his condition. we're told he is a 28-year veteran pilot. the first officer is an 11-year veteran pilot. some of the passengers were rebooked on a shuttle flight to seattle while others had to wait for a replacement pt pilot till midnight. we have cell phone video of a flight in denver, scheduled to come into san diego -- rather from san diego to new york city was diverted due to an unruly passenger onboard. jetblue 185 landed in denver about 7:156789 our affiliate there, kusa reports it was a, quo

quote, customer service issue between a flight attendant and female passenger. once she was escorted off the plane, the flight was back in the air. denver police, tsa and fbi are now investigating that incident. >> tom costello, thank you for that. tamron hall is over at the news desk. there was a bombing at the embassy in turkey. >> that's right. good morning, everyone. an explosion, as matt mentioned, outside the embassy in turkey. local police say a suicide bomber detonated in the capital city, killing two people, reportedly both security guards. ambulances at the scene are responding to several people who were wounded. dozens are dead in mexico city after a massive explosion rocked a state-owned oil complex. rescuers are searching through the rubble as investigators search for the cause of that blast that killed at least 25 people and injured more than 100 others. today, apologizing as

thousands of personal pages are released, detailing years of alleged abuse by l.a. priests. cardinal mahoney now has been stripped of his duties. >> a 14-year-old boy is recovering today after he was shot in the back of the neck. police say they have the shooter, suspected shooter, another student, in custody. a massive pile-up on an indiana interstate involving 40 vehicles. the road was closed in both directions for hours as crews cleared that accident. several people were hurt there. now let's head to wall street. cnbc's courtney reagan has the latest from the new york stock exchange on this friday. good morning, courtney. >> good morning to you, tamron. jobs report will set the tone for the market today. it is the first one of 2013. and this comes as the dow finishes its strongest january in 19 years. if you believe the old adage as

new information this morning on that tense standoff in alabama where a man holding a 5-year-old hostage in his underground bunker since tuesday afternoon. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in mid dms land city, alabama, this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, s savannah. the intense standoff is now entering its fourth day. police are being very cautious, saying the boy is unharmed. now we're hearing from the family of the murdered bus driver for the first time. up this dirt road, police and s.w.a.t. teams are closely watching an underground bunker. in it, a 5-year-old hostage and a man who police say opened fire on a school bus. >> the past few days have not been easy on anybody. >> reporter: the suspect is 65-year-old jimmy lee dike, a loner who distrusts the government. the boy is described only as ethan. the two are holed up underground

in a four by six feet bunker, said to be full of supplies, including a television. >> he may have something to say and he wants people to hear him. not sure what that is, but i don't think he intends to hurt that little boy. >> reporter: hostage negotiators have been talking to him through a pvc pipe and he has allowed police to send medicine and coloring books for the boy down that pipe. >> as long as you can measure that, there's no need to move this forward and perhaps get someone hurt. >> reporter: it all started tuesday when police say that he boarded a school bus, demanding two random children. the driver refused and that's when he allegedly shot and killed poland and made off with ethan. aaron poland and his sister, lidia, are the son and daughter of the bus driver. they want the world to know their father died a hero. >> every time a child got on my

dad's bus, they were no longer their parents, they were his. he considered them his children. and i know that's the reason why my dad took those shots for his children, just like he would do for me and my sister. >> reporter: they say their father wasn't the type to back down. >> my daddy was not just a hero on tuesday. my daddy was a hero my whole life. he was my hero. >> reporter: this standoff has dragged on for more than 60 hours now. several schools in the area remain closed as this town prays for a peaceful resolution. savannah? >> gabe gutierrez in midland city, alabama. now here's matt. put to a vote some time last week after hagel was met with sharp questions on either side

of the aisle. capitol hill correspondent kelly o'donnell has more on that. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the white house is not sounding any alarm bells. officials do say this was not a perfect performance from chuck hagel who, as you point out, is a republican who spent 12 years here in the senate representing nebraska. that should have made him very familiar with hearing that can get contentious, but it didn't turn out that way. respected for his decorated combat service in vietnam, but repeatedly pressed about his views on today's hot spots, even democrats took issue when chuck hagel referred to iran as a legitimate government. >> i do not see iran or the iranian government as a legitimate government. i want your thoughts on that. >> what i meant to say is it's recognizable, is recognized at the united nations. >> reporter: both parties wanted reassurance on israel. >> i'm a strong supporter of israel. i have been. i will continue to be. >> reporter: while hagel had done prep sessions in advanced,

he appeared unprepared when challenged on past statements, like saying the jewish lobby intimidates on capitol hill. >> name one person, in your opinion, who is intimidated by the israeli lobby in the united states senate. >> well, first -- >> name one. >> i don't know. >> reporter: another old friend wanted hagel to concede that he had been wrong to oppose the iraq troop surge. >> are you going to answer the question, senator hagel? the question is, were you right or wrong? that's a pretty straightforward question. >> i'm not going to give you a yes or no answer. >> reporter: some republicans questioned hagel's judgment on national security. >> why do you think that the iranian foreign ministry so strongly supports your nomination? >> i feel like i want to apologize for some of the tone and demeanor. >> reporter: while democrats suggested hagel was given a hard time. >> always enjoy being before the senate. >> reporter: and he enjoyed that for nearly eight hours on the hot seat.

the e.r. my daughter -- i call her my angel. she saved me life. she had to call 911. >> how old was she? >> 14 at the time. >> what's interesting is you don't picture women this young having to deal with heart issues, but that is often the case. >> but, you know, if her case having such a strong family history and not knowing it, the family history is the one thing that is not modifiable, and having such a strong family history, placed her at risk for heart attacks at an early age. so at 37, we talk about her risk factors, she was under chronic stress, slept probably, what, four to five hours. chronic sleep deficit. you add that, you know, those two with a family history and clearly she was ripe for a heart attack. >> what about you, eva? are you the one that had the aneurism? >> yes. >> tell us about that. >> so young too. >> that's the thing. i had type ii. i had a murmur, and i knew that

does was not quite right in my heart, but they said you're okay now. come back in five years. i chose to ignore the fact that i needed to go back. i waited 13 years to go back to follow-up, and the murmur was just a little noise in my heart, but over those 13 years the aneurism on top of my heart continued to grow, and i wasn't aware of it. so when i finally did go back, they did discover that the aneurism was very large. >> you are very athletic, right? >> i like to exercise a lot, yes. >> a lot of this stuff is preventible. that's the funny thing. you can fix it from the outside, but oftentimes we don't think of it. what can people at home do if they're concerned about this? >> i think people need to know that heart disease is the leading killer of women in united states. it can be prevented. knowing your risks, knowing that high blood pressure definitely diabetes, elevated blood sugar, elevated cholesterol, having a family history, as p you had with heart disease, being sedentary, and for us women knowing that stress plays a critical role in the build-up of
